A vehicle history report — like a CARFAX Canada report — pulls together records from insurers, registries, service shops and more, using the vehicle’s VIN. It’s one of the most valuable things you can look at before buying a used car. Here’s what each part tells you.
1. Accident and damage records
Reports list reported accidents and insurance claims, often with the claim amount. A small claim isn’t automatically a deal-breaker — what matters is the size, how many there are, and whether the repair was done properly. Large claims, structural damage or airbag deployment deserve a closer look and an independent inspection.
2. Registration history
See which provinces or states the vehicle has been registered in. A vehicle that spent years somewhere with heavily salted winter roads may have more underbody rust. A vehicle imported from outside Canada should have its import paperwork in order.
3. Branding and status
Watch for brands like salvage, rebuilt, stolen or non-repairable. These affect the vehicle’s value, insurability and resale. If a vehicle has been rebuilt, ask for the inspection documentation.
4. Liens
A lien means money is still owed on the vehicle — and in some cases the debt can follow the car to the new owner. When you buy from a licensed dealer, they’re responsible for clearing liens. If you’re buying privately, always check for liens before you pay.
5. Odometer readings
Readings recorded over the years should only go up. A reading that drops, or a long gap with no records, is worth asking about.
6. Service records
Regular oil changes and maintenance at reasonable intervals are a great sign. Gaps don’t always mean neglect — many owners use shops that don’t report — so ask for receipts.
7. Number of owners
Fewer owners is generally better, but a well-maintained three-owner car can beat a neglected one-owner car. Read the whole story, not just one line.
